Public vigilance on avian flu essential to protecting Western Port’s environment and economy

Avian flu (H5N1) was confirmed in the Western Port Biosphere on 12 August, after first reaching the Australian mainland in June. Almost 20% of Australia’s bird and mammal species are now assessed as high to extreme risk. The first H5N1 mammal infection on mainland Australia was confirmed on 23 August, the case being a long-nosed fur seal in South Australia. While there have been no recorded cases in Western Port to date, the susceptibility of mammals underscores the importance of doing everything we can to minimise the spread of the virus.

The good news: everyone can help. Western Port Biosphere CEO Mel Barker says community vigilance is our best line of defence.

If you see a sick or dead bird or marine mammal:

• Avoid contact — don’t touch, move or approach it, and keep pets away
• Record the location, date/time and take photos if it’s safe to do so
• Report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888
