This End Of Financial Year: Help Protect & Restore Western Port

Western Port is one of Victoria’s most remarkable marine environments β€” a Ramsar-listed wetland and part of the UNESCO-recognised Western Port Biosphere Reserve, one of only five biosphere reserves in Australia and the only one in south-east Victoria.Β

Its seagrass meadows, mudflats,Β reefsΒ and coastal waters support migratory shorebirds, fish populations, marineΒ lifeΒ and communities deeply connected to this place. This globally recognised landscape is where nature, culture and community are intended to thrive together.Β

But beneath the surface, Western Port’s marine ecosystems are under increasing pressure.Β

ProtectingΒ ourΒ marine habitats through restoration, communityΒ actionΒ and advocacy.

Marine habitats are changing. Biodiversity is declining. Coastal ecosystems that support fish, shellfish and birdlife are becoming more vulnerable to climate impacts, habitatΒ lossΒ and environmental degradation.Β

Yet there is still time to support recovery.Β

This EOFY, the Western Port Biosphere Foundation is seeking support to help protect and restore Western Port’s marine environment through three key areas of action:Β

  1. Supporting pilot marine restoration projects

We are working with partners to explore innovative marine habitat restoration opportunities in Western Port, including potential pilot projects focused on rebuilding underwater habitat and supporting marine biodiversity.Β

  1. Growing community engagement and citizen science

Community knowledge and participation are critical to the future of Western Port. Support will help grow opportunities for citizen science, marine monitoring,Β educationΒ and hands-on community involvement in caring for local ecosystems.Β

  1. Strengthening advocacy for Western Port

Western Port is globally significant, yet it continues to face increasing environmental pressure. This appeal will support advocacy and awareness initiatives that help protect the long-term health of this internationally recognised coastal environment.Β
