Proposed Port of Hastings development

11 February 2015
Port of Hastings

Local, State, and Commonwealth governments have all recognised the unique values of the Western Port region by supporting its designation as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program. This program recognises that humanity will draw a living from the land and marine environments, with a key principle of fostering conservation and sustainable development.

Sustainable development is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. It has economic, environmental, social and cultural dimensions. The proposed Port of Hastings development has long term implications for the region, with impacts that will become clearer as the project takes shape.

The Western Port Biosphere Foundation will work constructively with governments, agencies and the community of the region towards an outcome that is sustainable – ecologically, socially, and economically. The Foundation will advocate for robust processes of enquiry, consultation and decision-making based on the best available scientific, social and economic information.
