Your Biosphere Foundation membership will help to run programs that:

  • Enhance community stewardship for our biosphere reserve.
  • Conserve biological diversity, including the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot.
  • Maintain healthy ecosystems in our region, including the Western Port Ramsar site.
  • Develop innovative, sustainable ways of living and doing business.
  • Build markets for sustainable local products and showcase sustainable production to the world.
  • Tap into the knowledge and experience of UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves to benefit our region.

Community roundtables

Each member nominates a community roundtable to which to belong for exercising the rights accorded by the Biosphere Foundation's charter and constitution. A member may participate in the activities of any roundtable, but may only vote in the proceedings of the nominated roundtable.

Community roundtables are regionally-based forums that enable members and stakeholders to meet and deliver the Biosphere Foundation's mission at a local level. They implement their own local projects, as well as working with other roundtables, the Biosphere Foundation's research committee, local governments, and stakeholders to deliver Biosphere-wide projects. They also contribute to the development of Biosphere Foundation policy and knowledge. Each roundtable appoints a director to the board and its own office bearers.

There is provision for six community roundtables—one for each of the five municipalities within the biosphere reserve and one for French Island.

Our November 2010 annual general meeting was followed by a workshop to identify opportunities to achieve sustainable outcomes for the environment, community, agriculture and tourism. The session provided the foundation with valuable community input (see 2010 AGM workshop notes).
